In January I focused much of my reading on theology and especially on the never-ending debate between reformed theology and non-reformed theology. This month, my focus is mainly on the art of preaching, with a few other books thrown in for good measure. I will also begin my Ph.D. reading in February. Below is my February 2020 reading list. Start: Punch Fear in the Face, Escape Average, Do Work That Matters– Jon Acuff (Skill)
This book is an easy read that helps the reader create a system for optimization within their own life. Acuff’s style is to teach practical truth humorously, so it should make for an easy, fun and productive read.
Expositional Preaching: How we Speak God’s Word Today-David Helm (Theology)
The first of two books on expositional preaching that I’ll read this month. This book is part of the 9Marks series, so I’m expecting it to be concise yet beneficial.
From and Before God: A Practical Introduction to Expository Preaching- Sugel Michelen (Theology)
This book was recommended by both my seminary President (Jason Allen, and Mark Dever. A book on preaching recommended by two great preachers has to be worth the investment.
God is the Gospel: Meditations on God’s Love as the Gift of Himself – John Piper (Theology)
Most anything written by John Piper is guaranteed to be a deep, thought provoking read. I’m expecting big insights form this one.
How to Read a Book: The Classic Guide to Intelligent Reading- Mortimer J. Adler and Charles Van Doren (Ph.D Reading)
After reading this book I hope to be able to read a book…That seems paradoxical, given that it is an assigned textbook for a Ph.D course. However, I’m curious to learn for Adler and have read a positive reviews on Amazon. It has a 4.5 star rating with over 1,000 reviews…so it can’t be as simple as the title suggest.
